Numanthia is the most emblematic wine from Bodega Numanthia, and is considered as one of the great wines from D.O. Toro.
Bodega Numanthia estate covers 83 hectares. On these sunny parcels, the vineyards are planted far away from one another, not aligned in perfect rows. In order to survive the dry climate, the vines need plenty of space so that their roots can spread out deep into the soil. But Bodega Numanthia vines are unique not only in terms of their layout, but also by their age: 40% are over 70 years old, and the extraordinary 4.8-hectare parcel of Teso de los Carriles includes a handful of vine stocks that are over 140 years old. The art of oenology entails extracting the very best from these incredible vines, particularly the intense fruit aromas that specific to the Tinta de Toro grape, while shaping the elegance and structure of this appellation. While this approach to winemaking is shared by all three wines produced at the estate, each of them (Termes, Numanthia and Termanthia) has its own style and profile, sometimes vibrant and fruity, sometimes intense and powerful but always elegant and sophisticated.
Numanthia is a single variety Tinta de Toro, the reigning variety in D.O. Toro.
It is made from grapes grown on old vines about 100 years old, different plots around the Duero River at an altitude of around 700 metres above sea level. The vines have a low yield, but this makes the grapes very concentrated.
The fermentation takes place for 9 days at a controlled temperature between 26 and 28 ºC, applying two daily stirrings. After the fermentation there is a maceration with its skins for 25 days, applying soft stirring. Numanthia ages for 18 months in new Bordeaux French oak barrel that support the wine's good structure and balance. There is a racking every four months.
Numanthia is a wine with intense and complex character but very balanced with a soft texture, silky and elegant. A search for excellence which takes shape in every bottle.
Numanthia 2015 is a fresh, yet expressive wine. It first reveals a fruity nose with cranberries, blackcurrant and violet notes, then hints of cinnamon, cloves and black pepper followed by delicate and balsamic aromas with mint, eucalyptus and sandalwood.
Firm on the palate with a harmonious, wide and balanced evolution. The wine’s freshness offers length and vivacity, while it coats the palate with supple tannins. It first develops ripe red fruit, cocoa, cinnamon, mineral and spicy notes such as graphite, nutmeg or cloves, giving complexity and elegance. The finish is gentle and long, with minty, minerals and red berry notes.
